WHAT IS RADICAL LOVE TO YOU?
Radical love is finding joy against all odds. Especially rn with the world on fire, if my community and I can just squeeze a good time out of despair, or my partner and I can laugh on a very hard day, that connection makes me feel hopeful.
HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE LOVE?
One way I celebrate platonic love is by etching out weekly time for my BFF. We call it “Friendship Fridays” and every Friday we have dinner together and catch up on our weeks. It’s a beautiful tradition and offering to our bond.
HOW IS YOUR CELEBRATION OF LOVE DIFFERENT TO TRADITIONAL NOTIONS OR TYPICAL LOVE?
I think we place an enormous emphasis on romantic relationships being the only source of fulfillment. My generation was taught that to be in a couple was a mark of success and there was a huge pressure to couple off. But I find my friendships very much challenge that notion.
HOW DO YOU SHOW OTHERS THAT YOU LOVE THEM?
I have found it’s all about the little things. I mean, I love a large gesture don’t get me wrong but with my partner, I’ll take him lunch to work when I know he hasn’t eaten or I’ll watch a movie he suggested. I know that paying attention to their interests or needs allows you to understand how they see the world.
HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE SELF LOVE THROUGH CREATIVE OUTLETS? OR THROUGH YOUR CAREER?
I try to honor my gifts. It’s the way I show myself respect and it's when I feel the most alive.
Lara Fells is the founder and creative force behind St. Agni, an Australian label we love. We forged a deep, personal connection as we worked to collaborate on pieces for the SS24 St. Agni runway presentation. We named one of our latest styles, the Lara Cuff, after her.
WHAT IS RADICAL LOVE TO YOU? IS IT A DEEP CONNECTION WITH YOURSELF? IS IT THE LOVE THAT COMES FROM YOUR PLATONIC, FAMILIAL OR ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS? IS IT BRINGING TOGETHER AND HEALING YOUR COMMUNITY?
Radical love stems from a place of compassion. I think it can be experienced in a multitude of ways, through understanding, gratitude, giving and selflessness. I believe the truest form of radical love comes when you accept oneself, allowing you to love outwardly, without expectation.
HOW DO YOU CULTIVATE SELF LOVE THROUGH YOUR CREATIVE OUTLETS OR YOUR CAREER?
I find creativity a useful tool when it comes to self-love. It’s so important to nurture creativity and lean into creative outlets. For me, St. Agni is a creative outlet, and I have a lot of gratitude for this. I see creativity as a productive distraction, it’s about developing ideas, exercising the mind and nurturing optimism. This process keeps me inspired, passionate and in a sense, influences the love I have for myself.
HOW HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE OF THE MEANING OF LOVE AND THESE RELATIONSHIPS CHANGED OVER TIME?
Over time, the concept of love has evolved for me. Becoming a mother revealed a new strain of unconditional love. Cultivating St. Agni with my husband, Matt, brought us together as a team, alongside becoming parents. The combination of unconditional love and a sense of unity has shaped how I value my relationships. I think that love is ever evolving.
